ROBO-ETHICS – The Civil Rights Issue of the 21st Century

Grace feels blood

One of the emerging issues of the 21st century is the need to define rules and ethical models governing how robots/machines will interact with human society, and vice-versa. An article in the economist highlights some of the issues, but it left out one of the darker and more sinister moral dilemmas:

Sexploitation.

That’s right. We already see the early stages unfolding with inventions like the REAL DOLL. Once "artificial women" become more life-like and begin to blur the line between real and unreal, who’s to stop them from being exploited much like human sex slaves are today?

In the Godmachine film, John Lee frequents a brothel staffed with android "comfort models," android sex slaves used by the military to soothe the nerves of returning war vets. John’s psychosis leads him on a murder spree, killing his android conquests.

Because the film portrays the androids so lifelike, a controversy has emerged concerning the depiction of their gruesome killings. This is exactly what the filmmakers had hoped for by including these scenes in the film. It brings up very important moral questions, such as: Is it really wrong to kill an android? What’s to stop a society from allowing android sex slaves to be used in any way their owners see fit? What defines a "real woman" versus a synthetic one? What moral or ethical principles prevent rape, torture, and the murder of a robot?

These issues and others highlight some important issues just around the corner concerning robo-ethics, the civil rights issue of the 21st century.
